After being graduated as an Airplane Designer from the Delft University of Technology, Jan-Willem van Ewijk decided to be a filmmaker. His first feature film was the award-winning NU. (2006), which won the Best Debut Feature at the Dutch Film Festival, Best Feature at the European Independent Film Festival and was also selected to compete at the Montreal World Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. Atlantic is his second feature.
