Suad Gara is a British-Azerbaijani filmmaker and art curator who holds an MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy from the London School of Economics and an MLitt in Modern and Contemporary Art from the University of Glasgow.
Presently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Literary, Visual, and Musical Thought at the European Graduate School (Saas Fee/Valetta).
Having already made four shorts (BREAKFAST,
HOW TO BECOME A MERMAID, QARAGH, MAHSATI), she is currently working on her debut feature, HOTEL DIANA, which was selected for the WEMW Trieste Co-Production Forum (2023), where it won the Pop-Up Film Residency Award under the mentorship of Ada Solomon.
The project was also selected for the Less Is More script lab by Le Groupe Ouest (2023) and is currently in development with the BFI in the UK.
Before embarking on this journey in 2020, Suad was the chief curator and artistic director of YARAT Contemporary Art Space in Baku, Azerbaijan (2014-2020).
Her impressive curatorial work includes numerous exhibitions, an artist residency program, and the organization of the MAP Theatre and Performance Festival.
She has also produced artistic films by notable figures such as Almagul Menlibayeva, Vajiko Chachkhiani, Hannah Black, and Ahmet Ögüt, and curated independent projects for Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, MAMBo Bologna, and the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich.
