Sudan
"The ousting of president Al-Bashir and the end to his 30-year rule marked the turning point not only for Sudanese society, but also the defining moments for the main characters the film is following throughout this time:
Django, mid-twenties, is nicknamed after a term describing the men working the fields, the “nails of the earth”. He grew up in the outskirts of Khartoum, working as a bus driver and fighting for a better future for his children. During the revolution he is orchestrating the groups and pushing the resistance by spreading the word.
Esra is devoting all her time to her passion: painting. In her mid-twenties, she works as an entrepreneur with her own company, coming from a middle-class background in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city across the Nile. She always dreamt of painting political murals on the streets of Khartoum, and now her paintings about the revolution became famous.
Mu’min, 25, a full-hearted political activist, joined the mass protests in December 2018, making sure the demonstrations got their visibility on social media. Driven by seeing countless of his friends being locked up, he fights for justice in Sudan. During the protests, he has been producing leather gloves that can be used to safely throw back tear gas bombs.
After the first phase of unleashed enthusiasm followed a period after the massacre on June 3rd and then the Agreements of August, characterized by witnessing these characters’ lives, struggles, their work, their homes, reflecting on a possible way forward, often intertwined with the creative power of the arts.
This journey of Sudan is abruptly interrupted by the military coup on 25. October 2021 and has come to a complete and brutal stop by the fierce violence that unfolds since the war in Sudan broke out on 15. April 2023.
With the intention of making their stories accessible for international audiences and painting a picture of the revolution against Sudan‘s historic backdrop, the struggle for freedom stands at the center of the film and still stands within the calls and hearts of its characters despite the hopelessness of current events.
This film, which took five years in shooting, is witnessing events as they unfold, driven by scenes following the main characters before the coup, where whatever the characters are confronted with, they continue to fiercely demand the main slogan of the revolution, the call for MADANIYA – a civilian governance of Sudan.
