28 November 2022
Ward Kayyal’s HAMZA: CHASING THE GHOST CHASING ME began its festival tour with a world premiere at the 44th Cairo International Film Festival’s (CIFF) Short Film Competition.
The film had full-house screenings at Ewart Hall and the Cairo Opera House, the first of which was followed by a successful Q&A with the director.
“I’m delighted to be part of the 44th Cairo International Film Festival, a prominent festival, especially to me… A festival that brings together Egyptian and international film stars and embraces the young and new generation, working with high professionalism and presenting critical and exciting panel discussions and workshops,” Kayyal commented.
“The film’s positive feedback was touching and supportive. The audience’s way of understanding the film was wonderful. I think it is important that we participate in prominent Arab festivals such as the CIFF in order for the Palestinian voice to be heard not only in the Arab world but also worldwide, and that is what we will continue to do all the time through the camera.”
Moreover, the director thanked the festival’s administration and MAD Solutions for the tremendous efforts exerted throughout the festival.
Also, the film is set to compete in the fourth Cairo Shorts Film Festival’s official competition.
The film follows Hamza – a middle-aged man who refuses to abandon a routine he has kept since his release from Israeli jail; every day, he goes into the woods to hunt a lion that the locals don't believe exists.
Ward Kayyal’s film was written by Majd Kayyal and stars the award-winning Kamel El-Basha, along with Ruba Blal, Motaz Malhes, and Khulood Basel.
It is produced by Hiba Production and distributed worldwide by MAD Solutions.
