Muayad Alayan's highly-anticipated third feature A HOUSE IN JERUSALEM is set to hold its world premiere at the 2023 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) — which is set to run from January 25th to February 5th — in the Limelight Section.

Director Muayad Alayan and co-writer Rami Alayan will be among the attendees, along with the film’s cast members Miley Locke and Sheherazade Makhoul Farrell.

The film will have three screenings that will be followed by Q&A sessions:

  • Monday, January 30th at 16:00 - 18:10 at Pathé 7

  • Tuesday, January 31st at 13:15 - 15:25 at Pathé 4

  • Thursday, February the 2nd at 17:15 - 19:25 at Lantaren Venster 5

The film follows the story of Rebecca who moves with her father from the UK to Jerusalem in the hopes that a new beginning can help her heal the traumatizing death of her mother. Diving deep into the mystery of the old house they settle in and the mystical city of Jerusalem, Rebecca sets out on an enigmatic journey to discover what hides in the shadows of the house.

My brother and I have set out to make this personal film inspired by the memory of our mother, father, and grandmother, and by their resilience and survival,” commented the director Muayad Alayan.

After distributing Alayan’s previous two features — THE REPORTS ON SARAH AND SALEEM (2018) and LOVE, THEFT, AND OTHER ENTANGLEMENTS (2015) — MAD Solutions will also be distributing A HOUSE IN JERUSALEM in the Arab world.

Starring Johnny Harris, Makran Khoury, Souad Feres, Miley Locke, and Sheherazade Makhoul Farrell, A HOUSE IN JERUSALEM was the only Arab project selected for the 36th edition of Cinemart the IFFR Pro's Production market.

The film was co-produced by PalCine Productions in Palestine, Wellington Films in the UK, Red Balloon Films in Germany (who are also collaborating with MAD Solutions in Ameer Fakher Eldin’s YUNAN), Metafora Production in Qatar, and Key Film.

Alayan’s directorial debut LOVE, THEFT, AND OTHER ENTANGLEMENTS world premiered at the 2015 Berlinale (Panorama) and was featured at 17 of the world's most prestigious festivals.

Additionally, A HOUSE IN JERUSALEM is Alayan’s second film to world premiere at Rotterdam, following the success of his sophomore feature THE REPORTS ON SARAH AND SALEEM, which starred renowned Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi and won 2 awards at the 2018 IFFR, including the Special Jury Award and Hubert Bals Fund Audience Award. The film went on to feature at more than 50 festivals around the world.

The 2023 IFFR will mark the event’s return to an in-person format following two consecutive years in which it was held virtually.
