Two MAD Shorts take home awards at Carthage Film Festival
23 December 2024
Yesterday’s evening was a triumphant one for MAD Solutions, as two exceptional short films from its diverse distribution slate captured coveted awards at the closing ceremony of the 35th Carthage Film Festival, with NOTHING HAPPENS AFTER THAT claiming the prestigious Golden Tanit Award for Best Short Film and IN THE WAITING ROOM garnering the Audience Award.
NOTHING HAPPENS AFTER THAT tells the heart-wrenching story of a family, attempting to find a final resting place for their recently deceased and only child, highlighting the cruelty of indifference in times of hardship.
Previously, the short held its world premiere at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, where it won the Ministry of Culture and Science Jury Award.
It was written, directed, and produced by Ibrahim Omar and Ahmed Bashari, in collaboration with the Sudan Film Institute; starring the director himself Ibrahim Omar, Amer Ahmed, Khaled Moeit, and Ahmed Bashari; having been lensed by Tarek Abdullah, and edited by Amer Ahmed and Khaled Moeit.
As for IN THE WAITING ROOM, it world premiered to astounding success at the Dublin International Film Festival, and follows Hussein — a 30-year-old Palestinian Arab with Israeli citizenship — who escorts his freshly bereaved 70-year-old mother, Rashida, to her medical appointment in an Israeli hospital. As they wait for their turn, Rashida, who hasn't left her house in three months, tries to socialize with the other patients in her limited Hebrew.
Written and directed by Moatasem Taha, IN THE WAITING ROOM — which is produced by Thekra Makalda and Mohammed Ibraheem — stars Marleen Bajjali, Jalal Masarwa, Drora Coren, Bayan Daher, and Maria Toama.
