World Premiere of THE DEVIL AND THE BICYCLE at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival

THE DEVIL AND THE BICYCLE from its catchy name to its compelling story—will have its world premiere at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, competing in the National Competition from January 31st to February 8th. Known as one of the most significant short film festivals globally, Clermont-Ferrand stands as the largest of its kind and the second most important festival in France, right after Cannes. With over 7,000 short films submitted annually, it draws filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world.


The film will be screening daily from February 1st to February 8th as a part of the festival’s official program :

Let’s dive into the world Sharon Hakim brings to the screen. THE DEVIL AND THE BICYCLE follows 13-year-old Yasma, a Lebanese girl from an interfaith marriage, preparing for the ritual of her First Communion. However, as her sensuality awakens, an entirely different kind of ritual begins—one that transcends the bounds of religion and culture.
 
Sharon Hakim’s cinematic journey began with writing and theater, which led her to study in Paris and New York. In 2020, she directed THE GREAT NIGHT, her first short film, a musical film inspired from an Egyptian puppet operetta and broadcasted on Arte. The film was selected at Clermont-Ferrand, Cinemed and received two awards in Cabourg and one in Brest.
 
In 2024, she directed two short films. Nostalgia for the Dodos, pre-acquired by Canal + and shot in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, and The Devil and the Bicycle, shot in Lebanon and adapted from the eponymous short story by Tamara Saade.Sharon is currently working on her debut feature film,Mermaid Avenue, produced by Les Films du Tambour.
 
The film was written and directed by Sharon Hakim, with Astrig Chandèze-Avakian as the producer,in coproduction with Christelle Younes. The cast is led by Mélissa Succar, and the film features cinematography by Laetitia de Montalembert, editing by Clémence Samson, and sound design by Rawad Hobeika, Benoît Gargonne, and Lionel Guenoun. The film’s music was composed by Marc Codsi and Aghiad Ghanem. MAD World handles the worldwide sales for THE DEVIL AND THE BICYCLE.
