15 June 2025
Continuing its impressive festival run, Akram Moncer’s social documentary AGREB MAJNOUNA captivated audiences at the Heritales-International Heritage Film Festival — part of the European Archaeology Days (EAD) — on June 13th in Portugal.

Dedicated to safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage, Heritales operates under the UNESCO Chair for Peace and Sustainability and collaborates with institutions such as the University of Évora and the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research.

Set in Oudhref, a city in northern Gabès, AGREB MAJNOUNA follows women weaving at their looms to assert their individuality and existence. Through their artistry, they preserve memory, shaping life itself as an act of survival.

Authentically portraying the vital role of women in Tunisian society, the film has embarked on an impressive festival journey, world premiering at the Carthage Film Festival, where it earned the UGTT Award for Best Tunisian Feature Documentary and subsequently having its European premiere at the Afrika Film Festival Leuven in Belgium, and its Arab World premiere at the Jerusalem International Film Festival.

It has since been showcased at numerous international festivals, including the Human Rights Film Festival, where it received the Best Documentary Film Award, solidifying its critical acclaim and global recognition.

Featuring a cast led by Yasmina Moncer, Tawaa Othman, Jannet Ismail, and Besma Mannoubi, the film is directed and written by Akram Moncer, with cinematography by Abdelmonem Ben Gaied and Helmi Ben Chahboun, and editing by Zied Ben Hassine. Artworks produced the film, with MAD World handling worldwide sales and MAD Distribution managing distribution across the Arab World.

A graduate of the Higher Institute of Multimedia Arts in Manouba, Tunisia, specializing in audiovisual and cinema, Akram Moncer produced several documentaries for the Al Jazeera Documentary channel.

His first feature film, MIGRATORY BIRDS, was released in 2014. Since then, he has served as the general director of the 48 Hour Film Project Tunis festival. Akram Moncer’s filmography includes seven films, with his latest being AGREB MAJNOUNA.
