THE BURDENED screenings extended at Zawya Cinema in Cairo

03 August 2025
After screening for a week since July 23rd, Amr Gamal’s THE BURDENED run at Zawya Cinema — Cairo’s designated arthouse theater — has been extended for another week, on the following dates:
●     Sat, Aug 2nd, 3:45pm
●     Sun, Aug 3rd, 9:30pm
●     Mon, Aug 4th, 4:15pm

Directed by the award-winning Yemeni filmmaker Amr Gamal, THE BURDENED offers a deeply moving and intimate look at a middle-class family in the southern Yemeni city of Aden. After both parents lose their jobs due to the country’s economic crisis, they discover they are expecting a fourth child — a development that pushes them to consider abortion, challenging the conservative beliefs of their community.

The film won over 16 awards at top festivals worldwide; among its most notable wins were the Amnesty International Film Prize at the Berlinale, a Gold Hugo at Chicago, two Jury Prizes at Valencia, a Special Jury Prize at Taipei, and top awards at both Oran and Malmö.

Amr Gamal is a Yemeni film and theatre director, producer, and writer. In 2005, he founded the Khaleej Aden Theater Troupe in Aden to revive commercial theater in Yemen after a long hiatus following the 1994 civil war.

In 2018, he directed his first feature film, 10 DAYS BEFORE THE WEDDING, which was a major success in Yemen and became the country's official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 91st Academy Awards.

His second film, THE BURDENED, made history as the first Yemeni film to be screened at the Berlin International Film Festival.
